This easy Boat Dip is a riff on the viral TikTok recipe, with a few changes that make it thicker, richer, and even more flavorful. This 6-ingredient version is made with cream cheese, sour cream, mayo, Rotel, shredded cheese, and ranch or "Fiesta Ranch" seasoning for a cool, zesty bite that's perfect with chips.

Before You Start Cooking
Method: One-Bowl Skill: Easy
- Why "Boat Dip"? The name stuck after the original TikToker, Lindsey, shared it as her family's snack for boating days: quick to make, full of flavor, and easy to pack in a cooler. It's just as perfect for cookouts, potlucks, or anytime you need a no-fuss appetizer that feeds a crowd.
- Plan ahead: Boat Dip only takes about 10 minutes to make, but it needs time in the fridge to develop flavor. Chill for at least 2 hours, though overnight is ideal.
- Equipment check: You'll need one large mixing bowl and an electric hand mixer. If you don't have a mixer, a sturdy spoon or rubber spatula will work-just be sure the cream cheese is softened so everything blends smoothly.
How to Make Boat Dip

Start by placing a block of full-fat, brick-style cream cheese in your mixing bowl. Make sure it's softened to room temperature-this makes it easier to blend smoothly. Use an electric hand mixer to whip the cream cheese until it's light and fluffy.
Once the cream cheese is whipped, add the following ingredients to the bowl and mix on low speed until fully combined:
- Sour Cream. Full-fat gives you the creamiest texture, but you can lighten it up with reduced-fat sour cream or 2% plain Greek yogurt.
- Mayo. Adds richness and tang. I use Duke's or Hellmann's.
- Ranch Seasoning. Use a 1-ounce packet of your favorite store-bought ranch seasoning/dressing mix, such as Hidden Valley. For a zestier flavor, my crew likes it when I use "Fiesta Ranch" Dip Mix.
- Diced Tomatoes with Green Chilies. I usually grab a can of Rotel Original. Drain the liquid well before adding. You can switch it up with Mild, Hot (made with habaneros), Fire Roasted, or Chipotle varieties of Rotel.
- Colby Jack Cheese. For the smoothest dip, shred it yourself using the fine holes on a box grater. Pre-shredded cheese can make the dip a little gritty due to added starches to prevent clumping in the bag.
Step-by-Step:

- Step 1: Whip cream cheese until smooth.

- Step 2: Add the rest of the ingredients to the bowl.

- Step 3: Beat with your hand mixer on low until well combined.

- Step 4: Step 4: Cover and refrigerate until well chilled.
Once the dip is mixed, transfer it to an airtight container and refrigerate so the flavors can come together. If you're short on time, 1-2 hours in the fridge will do, but for the best flavor, let it chill for at least 4 hours-or even better, overnight.
Ways to Change It Up
- Seasonings. Instead of ranch seasoning, use a packet of your favorite taco seasoning (as in the original recipe shared on TikTok). You can also use a half-and-half mixture of ranch and taco seasonings.
- Black Beans. For a heartier dip with Mexican-inspired flavor, stir in rinsed and drained canned black beans by hand after combining the base ingredients with your mixer. Use as much as you'd like from a 15-ounce can.
- Corn. Included in the original recipe shared on TikTok. Add an 8- to 11-ounce can of sweet, fire-roasted, or Mexican-style corn. You can also use cooked fresh or frozen corn. Drain canned corn well, and like the black beans, mix it into the dip by hand.
- Meat. Stir in cooked, shredded chicken breast (about a cup), crumbled crisp-cooked bacon (10 strips), or browned and drained ground beef (½ pound). Adjust the quantities depending on how hearty you want the dip to be.
- Cheese. Substitute sharp cheddar, Monterey Jack, or a blend of Mexican-style cheeses for the Colby Jack.
- Make it Spicier. Add a few shakes of your favorite hot sauce to the dip, to taste.
Storage
You can store Boat Dip in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days. Take it out of the fridge 10-15 minutes before serving and let it stand at room temperature so it can soften up a bit.

Serving Suggestions
I often garnish the dip with extra shredded cheese and thinly sliced scallions for a nice presentation, but this is totally optional. This dip is just as delicious straight from the storage container, no frills needed!
Here are some of our favorite dippers:
- Tortilla Chips: Choose a variety that isn't too thin so the chips don't break in the bowl. We like using Tostitos Scoops.
- Fritos Scoops: These salty, crunchy, extra-sturdy chips are perfect for scooping up a hearty dip like this recipe.
- Fresh Vegetables: For a lighter option, pair the dip with fresh veggies like carrot and celery sticks, bell pepper slices, or cucumber rounds.
- Crackers: Buttery options like Club crackers or Toasteds Buttercrisp are great for those who prefer a dipper that's less salty than (most varieties of) tortilla chips.
- Pita Chips: For a lighter crunch that's still strong enough for dipping. We like the plain/sea salt varieties with Boat Dip.
- Pretzels: Try this dip with hard pretzels, such as dipping sticks or flat Pretzel Crisps. Soft pretzel bites are also a fun alternative.

Amanda's Top Tip
Boat Dip is a great summertime snack, but remember, it's perishable, especially under the sun. It's important to keep food safety in mind, especially when you're enjoying the outdoors in warm weather.
In general, you can leave dairy-based dips out at room temperature (70°F) for up to 2 hours. If it's hotter than that, especially 90°F and above, keep your dip out for no longer than 1 hour to avoid spoilage.
For a longer gathering, consider serving the dip in batches, bringing out fresh, chilled dip as needed. If taking your Boat Dip on the go, you can also split it into smaller containers, so all of the dip isn't out of your cooler at once.
I also love using a chilled serving bowl to keep my dip at the right temperature for longer, especially outdoors. The Pampered Chef Cool & Serve Bowl is my go-to; it comes in both 1-quart and 2-quart sizes. I'm not affiliated with them-I just really like how these bowls work!
